Uganda has a structured military force under the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), with different ranks and insignia used to identify officers and their positions within the army.

But do you know the different military ranks in the UPDF, what their insignia look like and how the hierarchy is organised?

From the highest rank of General to the lowest rank of Private, the UPDF has several levels of military leadership and responsibility.

The ranks are broadly divided into commissioned officers, non-commissioned officers, and other military personnel, with each level represented by distinctive insignia worn on military uniforms.

According to the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, the insignia include stars, pips, crown arms and chevrons, which help distinguish the different ranks.
