The Level Up deejay had promised the release earlier this year, telling Crack Magazine that he’s been urging his colleagues to move away from Dancehall’s ‘sporadic’ singles-based riddim culture to more cohesive presentations like Great Is He, which he released on January 27 under Drake’s OVO Sound.

“No one’s doing it,” he said. “I try to appeal to my Jamaican artists, telling all of them to put out more albums. People just see Jamaican music as singles.”

The release follows his Hot Skull, Fry Yiy, Boil Brainz mixtape, released in 2010, his Yiy Change mixtape in 2012, and the extended Fixtape mixtape in 2020.

Great Is He, which peaked at No. 3, was Popcaan’s fifth entry on the weekly Billboard Reggae Albums chart since he began his music career in the late 2000s.

In 2014, he released his debut studio album, Where We Come From under Dre Skull’s Mixpak Records.  It peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s Reggae Albums chart.

His sophomore album Forever was also done under the auspices of Mixpak Records, with production again being primarily handled by Dre Skull.  It entered the Billboard 200 chart at No. 171 and also peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Reggae albums chart.

His third and fourth albums Vanquish and FIXTAPE, both released on OVO Sound, also debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart, just as their predecessors did.

Meanwhile, fans are loving every bit of the surprise compilation. “Popcaan the real goat 🐐 of Dancehall,” one supporter commented on Instagram.

“Super proud of your hard work,” another said.
