Kabale-based photojournalist Moses Agaba has opened up about his struggles with obesity, revealing how the condition has affected his daily life, including the cost of transportation and how people treat him in public.

Agaba was hosted on NTV’s Mwasuze Mutya, where he shared his experience with significant weight gain that began in 2013. After seeking medical attention, he was diagnosed with obesity, a condition he says has since presented several challenges.

Among his biggest struggles is the high cost of transportation, as he is often required to pay for two seats when travelling in taxis and buses. Even boda boda riders charge him extra because of his size.

Yesterday, I travelled from Kabale and had to pay UGX 80,000 in transport fares. I’m still not used to paying double for transport. The boda boda charges me extra, and the taxi also charges me twice because I occupy two seats. It’s not easy living with obesity.

Agaba also revealed that doctors have advised him to consider surgery to help manage his weight. The procedure could involve reducing the size of his stomach, allowing him to feel full sooner and consume smaller amounts of food.

The journalist, who currently weighs 186 kilogrammes, further spoke about the emotional toll of living with obesity, particularly the stares, whispers and invasion of his privacy that he experiences in public.

He expressed disappointment with people who take his pictures without seeking his permission, urging them to show more understanding instead of making assumptions about his condition.

I currently weigh 186kg, and whenever people meet me, they stare or whisper about me. Some even take my pictures without my permission. I wish people would ask me what caused this change in my body. There may be a story behind it that you know nothing about.
