Dancehall singer Mickie Wine, born Michael Mukwaya, opened up about an unexpected eviction he faced early in life while renting a house, saying it had nothing to do with rent arrears but with his love for domestic animals.

The singer shared the experience while responding to a question about whether he had ever been kicked out of a rental property over accumulated rent arrears.

Mickie explained that he was once renting from businessman Hajji Bakaluba, where he paid UGX 200,000 monthly. During his stay, he kept a dog that provided security for the tenants and helped scare away thieves who attempted to access their fenced compound.

However, trouble started when the dog reportedly bit one of their neighbours, whom Mickie described as a man who frequently drank alcohol and sometimes overindulged.

According to the singer, the neighbour had previously beaten the dog, prompting him to warn the man’s sister that he could eventually get bitten if they did not take action.

Unfortunately, his warning went unheeded until the incident happened.

The neighbour subsequently reported the matter to the landlord, who, after receiving complaints from other tenants, asked Mickie to vacate the premises.

“I’ve ever been evicted from a rental but not due to rent arrears issues. It was for other reasons. You know I love animals so much. So at the rental we had a dog that I looked after and it would provide security for us and it would arrest thieves in our fence. I remember I used to pay Shs200k as rent. The rentals belonged to Hajji Bakaluba. So one time, we had a neighbour who used to booze and would overdo it. One time he beat the dog and I warned his sister that he would get bitten by the dog one time, but they didn’t take action. One time he got bitten by the dog and reported me to the landlord. Hajji Bakaluba then asked me to leave his rentals.”

Fortunately, the eviction did not leave him stranded because he had already started constructing his own home in Magere by then.

He revealed that he moved into the partially completed house, occupying the finished section as construction works continued on the remaining parts of the property.

“However, what helped me is that by the time, I had started constructing my own home in Magere and moved in though it was still under construction. I would stay in the completed department as I finished the rest of the house. And life moved on. That’s the house you all see.”
