Veteran gospel singer Joan Ndikirya has shared how a slap from her ex-husband resulted in a brain clot and paralysis.

Joan Makumbi, now known by her birth name Joan Ndikirya, was one of the most celebrated gospel artists in the 2000s and released songs like Elinya Lyo Dungi and Mukama Nkwesiga, among others, that healed people’s hearts.

She, however, disappeared from the music scene, and after resurfacing during her interview with Spark TV, she revealed that she had been paralyzed for the past fifteen years.

The singer revealed that she had a health issue, and her mother took her to the nearest health facility in Najjanankumbi, where doctors prescribed 6 drips. However, on the third round, she convulsed and went into a coma, and she was rushed to Mulago Hospital.

With the results from a CT scan, the doctors realized she had a blood clot in her brain, and she stayed unconscious for six full days.

“I do not want to say that I’m sick because it sounds like I’m ungrateful to God. I spent 6 days in a coma following a clot in the brain. When I became conscious, my left side was paralyzed,” she said.

Joan, in one of her interviews, revealed that her health troubles started in December 2011, after misunderstandings with her ex-husband that turned violent. He is alleged to have slapped her, resulting in the blood clot that almost took her life.

She refused to address the issue in detail, noting that she didn’t want to be dragged back into her past.  She, however, confirmed that her ex-husband banned her from using his surname, a name that was known by most people.

“They always referred to me as Joan Makumbi but the owner of the name banned me from using it and I do not want to use it ever again. Just take it that it was a clot. I do not want to remember my past because I’m looking at the future. Right now, I take it that I got a clot on my brain, went into a coma, then came back,” she said.

The mother of three expressed her gratitude towards the artists and pastors who, she said, have visited her since the ordeal. She has continued serving in churches, and now she is praying for a promoter to organise a concert for her.
