For many people, a failed application, three troubled Google Play publishing accounts, unsuccessful development attempts, and the loss of almost 200 hosting clients would have been enough reason to abandon a business dream.
But for Ugandan DJ, radio producer, broadcaster, and technology entrepreneur Niwandinda Daniel, popularly known as DJ Dan Starboy, those setbacks became part of a much bigger journey.
Today, as co-founder of High Grade Sounds Technologies Ltd, the man who once entertained listeners through Uganda Broadcasting Corporation's Magic 100 FM is pursuing an ambitious project: Magic 1Xtra, a digital entertainment super app bringing radio, television, movies, Music Distribution, Buy & Sell, and creator services into one ecosystem.
Yet, behind the expanding platform is a story that began with something surprisingly simple.
A Friday-night reggae and dancehall radio show needed an internet streaming platform.
That was in 2020.
Six years later, the idea has survived workplace tensions, financial struggles, multiple developers, failed launches, and the challenges of building a hosting company.
To understand Magic 1Xtra today, one must first return to the studio where the dream began.
The Magic 100 FM Years: Where a Radio DJ Started Thinking Beyond the Microphone
In 2018, DJ Dan Starboy joined Magic 100 FM, a radio station under the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC).
His responsibilities would eventually extend well beyond playing music. He worked as a DJ, presenter, producer, and music scheduler, gaining an understanding of both on-air broadcasting and the work behind the scenes.
One of his early assignments was the evening DJ mix at 7 PM.
He later transformed that slot into The Magic After Burn, introducing a distinct music identity to the evening programming.
In 2019, he introduced The Magic Top 7 at 7, a music countdown concept that became part of his radio journey through 2023.
Behind the scenes, he also worked closely with DJ Jermine, popularly known as "The J in J."
According to Dj Dan Starboy, the two served as official music schedulers for Magic 100 FM, a role that required them to think about more than individual songs.
Music scheduling is part of what gives a radio station its identity. It shapes the listening experience, organizes programming, balances popular records with new releases, and determines how a station sounds throughout the day.
For a DJ passionate about reggae and dancehall, this was an opportunity to understand the machinery of professional broadcasting.
But one program would influence his future more than any other.
That program was Coast2Coast.
Coast2Coast: The Friday Night Show That Inspired a Technology Dream
Every Friday, from 9 PM until 1 AM, Coast2Coast created a space for reggae and dancehall music on Magic 100 FM. and it inspired Youths who later got a chance to dj with All Time Celebrated Reggae and Dancehall Ambassador Which was Named to him by the Late Bunny Wailler
The program was originally hosted by Lala Noreal, with DJ Dan Starboy joining as its DJ.
After Lala's departure, Dj Dan Starboy says the show was officially handed over to him through DJ Jermine, who worked closely with the station manager at the time, Mr. Peter Otai.
For Dj Dan Starboy, taking responsibility for Coast2Coast was more than a programming opportunity.
It was a chance to connect Ugandan radio listeners directly with Jamaican music culture.
The show embraced a world of reggae and dancehall that extended far beyond the music typically associated with mainstream Ugandan radio.
Dj Dan Starboy recalls an extraordinary range of Jamaican talent being featured through the show's interviews, artist appearances, and music programming.
The names associated with that era included Popcaan, Konshens, Spice, Alkaline, Masicka, Aidonia, Tommy Lee Sparta, Skillibeng, Shenseea, Busy Signal, Charly Black, Demarco, Dexta Daps, Teejay, Intence, Skeng, Squash, Chronic Law, Govana, Jada Kingdom, Jahvillani, Rygin King, Rytikal, 450, Valiant, Quada, Jahmiel, I-Octane, Bugle, Serani, Tifa, Ishawna, D'Angel, Ce'Cile, Agent Sasco (Assassin), Kiprich, Blak Ryno, Deva Bratt, Laden, Merital Family, G Whizz, Vershon, Kemar Highcon, Stylo G, and Kranium.

For clarity, this wide-ranging roster reflects the artist interviews, appearances, music played, and catalogue influences described by Dj Dan Starboy, rather than suggesting every listed performer appeared personally in the UBC studio.
Some Jamaican artists were also featured through Skankin Rays, the reggae-focused television program broadcast on UBC TV on Fridays, according to Dj Dan Starboy account.
The wider programming connected Ugandan audiences to generations of Caribbean music, from foundation reggae to modern dancehall.
For Dan, the experience demonstrated how powerful music could be at connecting countries and cultures.
Yet, while Coast2Coast was reaching listeners through traditional radio, he noticed a limitation.
What about listeners who were outside the station's FM coverage area?
What about Ugandans living abroad?
What about a Jamaican artist who wanted to hear their interview broadcast in Kampala?
And what about music fans who had discovered the show but could not listen to Magic 100 FM through an online platform?
According to Dj Dan Starboy, UBC did not have the kind of accessible streaming solution he wanted for the station at that time.
He began asking himself why the listening experience had to stop at the boundaries of conventional radio transmission.
That question became the foundation of Magic 1Xtra.
2020: Magic1Xtra.com Was Born
In 2020, while still working at UBC, DJ Dan Starboy started Magic1Xtra.com.
The original concept was not a super app featuring dozens of digital services.
It was primarily a reggae and dancehall streaming platform, inspired by Coast2Coast and the need to make radio content accessible beyond traditional broadcasting.
The idea was to connect listeners with music and programming through the internet.
From his perspective, the technology could benefit broadcasters, listeners, and artists alike.
A radio station could potentially reach audiences beyond Uganda. A fan could follow their favorite show on a smartphone. International artists could connect with the African audiences supporting their music.
But while Dj Dan Starboy believed the idea was promising, he recalls that not everyone around him welcomed it.
He says some colleagues misunderstood his intentions and feared the project might interfere with their positions or responsibilities.
What he saw as an opportunity to expand the audience was, in his account, perceived by some as a threat.
Workplace tensions followed.
The deeper problem, however, was financial.
Dj Dan Starboy did not have enough money to fund the kind of streaming application he imagined.
The idea existed. The need was clear to him.
But turning it into a fully functioning product was another matter.
Magic 1Xtra had been born, but its most difficult years were still ahead.
The First Developers, Unfinished Apps and a Painful Lesson About Technology
Dj Dan Starboy's early attempts to build Magic 1Xtra involved working with outside developers.
He identifies Mark Kahima of Caystard Group International as the developer involved in the first application.
But according to Dj Dan Starboy, the finished experience did not match the product he had imagined.
He then engaged two more developers, Farooq and Bashiru, hoping to bring the platform closer to his vision.
Despite those efforts, the application continued to fall short of his expectations.
For a founder without a substantial development budget or full technical control, each unsuccessful attempt made the project harder to sustain.
There were the costs of development, the challenge of maintaining the platform, and the frustration of repeatedly having to explain what the application was supposed to become.
And then came another setback: Google Play.
Dj Dan Starboy says the project went through three different publishing accounts that were ultimately terminated or otherwise became unusable for his plans.
The difficulty, he explains, was that those accounts were controlled by other people rather than by him.
According to his account, some account holders were also publishing applications for other individuals, and problems involving those apps affected the publishing accounts.
These are Dj Dan Starboy's recollections of the circumstances; the precise reasons for the account enforcement actions have not been independently established.
For Magic 1Xtra, however, the consequences were significant.
The platform lost continuity on one of the most important distribution channels for Android applications.
The story is not without a public record. Magic 1Xtra received news coverage as a radio and television application in September 2023. An archived listing also records a Magic 1Xtra TV Channels application that became unavailable on Google Play in June 2024.
For Dj Dan Starboy, the experience exposed a difficult reality of building digital products through arrangements in which the founder does not control all the essential accounts and infrastructure.
The app could carry his vision, but he did not always control the systems on which that vision depended.
Eventually, he stepped away from active development.
Not because the ambition had disappeared, he explains, but because he needed a different way forward.
Nairobi, BBC Radio Imaging and a New Chapter With Black Market Records
While Magic 1Xtra was facing development problems, Dj Dan Starboy continued expanding his experience within the broadcasting and music industries.
In 2023, he says he received an opportunity to advance his radio imaging skills through the BBC in Nairobi, Kenya.
Radio imaging is the creative production work that gives a station its distinctive sound, including jingles, promos, sweepers, station identification, and the overall audio presentation between programs.
For someone who had worked behind the microphone and in radio production, improving those skills formed another part of his professional development.
Around 2023–2024, he also became involved with Black Market Records, adding another chapter to his work in music and entertainment.
These experiences broadened his understanding of the industry.
But Magic 1Xtra remained unfinished business.
The challenge was no longer simply creating an application.
It was figuring out how to create a digital business that could survive.
And that realization eventually led him into another difficult industry: web hosting.
The $9.55 Hosting Business That Lost Nearly 200 Clients
Before Magic 1Xtra could grow into a dependable entertainment platform, Dan needed hosting services and the infrastructure to support websites, streaming, and other digital products.
Like many entrepreneurs entering web hosting, he initially relied on a reseller arrangement.
He recalls paying approximately $9.55 per month to operate from another provider's server.
At first, the business showed encouraging signs.
His customer base grew to around 200 clients.
For a small entrepreneur building a technology business, reaching that number suggested that the opportunity was real.
But then the technical problems became overwhelming.
The server was frequently unavailable, according to Dj Dan Starboy, affecting the websites and services that customers expected to be accessible.
And in hosting, customers do not judge a business by how affordable its reseller package is.
They judge it by whether their websites work.
As outages continued, clients began leaving.
Dj Dan Starboy says he eventually lost virtually all of the customers he had built up.
The business that was supposed to become a foundation for his digital ambitions instead became another financial and reputational setback.
For a period, he took a break.
He researched alternative hosting arrangements, tried to understand the underlying problems, and even considered changing the company's domain name because he wondered whether its identity was preventing new customers from signing up.
But the larger issue was not the name.
It was reliability, infrastructure, customer confidence, and control.
Those lessons would shape the next phase of his business.
HostHerb.com: The Company Built From Hosting Frustration
Out of that difficult experience came a renewed focus on HostHerb.com, the web hosting and digital services business that Dj Dan Starboy has been developing alongside his entertainment ventures.
The platform offers services including web hosting, domain registration, reseller hosting, virtual servers, radio streaming infrastructure, video streaming, and website development.
For Dj Dan Starboy, HostHerb was not simply another business idea.
It addressed a practical problem he had experienced firsthand.
He needed more dependable technical infrastructure to support the entertainment products he was trying to build.
And he wanted to avoid relying entirely on arrangements that had previously left his projects vulnerable.
HostHerb's journey also came with uncomfortable decisions.
Dj Dan Starboy recalls allowing some friends to host websites and services without paying while he continued covering the server bills himself.
What began as goodwill became difficult to sustain as operating costs accumulated.
It was another reminder that a business needs more than loyal friends and an exciting vision.
It needs a way to pay its bills.
Today, Dj Dan Starboy says HostHerb is showing more promise.
More importantly, the company has become part of the infrastructure supporting his broader digital operations.
These include Magic1Xtra.com, RadioXtrimFM.com, HighGradeSounds.com, and the ongoing Magic 1Xtra application project.
For Dj Dan Starboy, the businesses are connected.
Music gave him a reason to enter broadcasting. Broadcasting inspired the streaming platform. Problems developing and maintaining that platform pushed him deeper into technology. And hosting became a necessary foundation for the services he wanted to operate.
The journey had come full circle.
June 2026: The Decision to Start Magic 1Xtra All Over Again
After years of struggling with different versions of the application, Dj Dan Starboy made a major decision in June 2026.
He would begin rebuilding Magic 1Xtra from scratch.
This time, however, he was no longer approaching the project with the same technical limitations he had faced in 2020.
The years of frustration had motivated him to study website development, understand hosting systems, and become more involved in building and managing his own platforms.
Rather than depending exclusively on developers to interpret his ideas, he had gained skills to participate directly in the development process.
Starting again meant revisiting the architecture, user experience, branding, and the different services that Magic 1Xtra was supposed to provide.
It was a demanding decision.
Years of earlier work had not produced the stable application he wanted.
But he regarded a fresh start as an opportunity to build something closer to the original vision — this time with a wider understanding of both broadcasting and digital technology.
And the vision had grown.
Magic 1Xtra was no longer just a solution for people who wanted to listen to Coast2Coast online.
It was becoming an entertainment super app.
What Exactly Is Magic 1Xtra Super App?
At its heart, Magic 1Xtra is being developed as an all-in-one digital entertainment platform, designed to bring multiple viewing, listening, and creator experiences into one place.
Its core entertainment offering centers on live television, online radio, movies, series, music, DJ mixes, and podcasts.
Live TV — Television Beyond the Living Room
The platform brings supported television channels into an internet-based viewing experience.
Instead of being limited to a conventional television set, viewers can explore available programming through digital devices.
The aim is to connect audiences with news, music, entertainment, and other television content wherever compatible streams are accessible.
Live Radio The Idea That Started Everything
Radio remains deeply connected to Magic 1Xtra's identity.
The platform is designed to provide access to streaming stations and audio programming, extending the radio experience beyond traditional broadcasting.
For Dan, this part of the app reflects the original problem he wanted to solve in 2020.
Movies and Series — A Wider Entertainment Experience
The movies and series section expands Magic 1Xtra beyond its original music audience.
Viewers can explore available film and episodic entertainment from within the platform, with the catalog dependent on content availability and access rights.
Music, DJ Mixes and Podcasts
Music remains a central part of the experience.
Magic 1Xtra connects audiences with music programming, mixes, podcasts, and other audio content.
For an entrepreneur whose career began in reggae and dancehall, this is not simply another feature.
It is part of the platform's foundation.
Creator Studio — Bringing Content Creators Into the Ecosystem
The platform's Creator Studio and creator-focused services aim to give DJs, podcasters, and digital entertainers a place to submit and manage content.
Instead of limiting the platform to content produced by established broadcasters, the broader concept creates room for independent talent.
It is an idea rooted in Dj Dan Starboy's own experience as a DJ who understood the difficulties of finding consistent opportunities.
Magic Monitor — Helping the Music Industry Follow Its Content
The wider Magic 1Xtra project also includes Magic Monitor, an evolving music-industry feature centered on charts, station activity, song and advertising monitoring, and reports.
Its planned sections include Top 100, Top Stations, song or advert submissions for monitoring, and reporting tools.
The ambition is to help artists, promoters, and music industry professionals better understand how songs and campaigns are performing.
Other services, including music distribution and additional digital tools, form part of the expanding product vision.
Not every planned feature is necessarily available in its final form today. The application remains an evolving technology project.
But the direction is clear: Magic 1Xtra wants to become more than somewhere people press Play.
It aims to connect entertainment consumption with content creation, broadcasting, discovery, and music-industry services.
From Xtrim TV to Magic Pulse TV and Now 1Xtra TV
Magic 1Xtra's expansion has also been shaped by Dj Dan Starboy's experiments with digital television.
The television journey has included different identities, beginning with Xtrim TV, evolving into Magic Pulse TV, and now continuing through 1Xtra TV.
Rather than viewing these names as unrelated businesses, Dj Dan Starboy presents them as stages in the evolution of his digital broadcasting ambition.
A similar connection can be seen in 961 Xtrim Radio, a digital station built around reggae, dancehall, music, entertainment, and community.
Dj Dan Starboy traces the station's origins back to 2015, before his 2018 entry into Magic 100 FM.
These ventures show that the ambition to build independent music and broadcasting platforms did not begin after he left traditional radio.
It had been growing alongside his professional broadcasting career.
The Bigger Interview: Why DJ Dan Starboy Believes Radio Needs to Rethink Its Priorities
Another important part of Dj Dan Starboy's story is his concern about how some radio companies select presenters and entertainers.
He believes that, in parts of the industry, management decisions have increasingly placed too much emphasis on social media numbers.
In particular, he questions situations where a large TikTok following is treated as sufficient evidence that someone can become an effective radio presenter.
His argument is not that popular social media personalities should be excluded from broadcasting.
It is that radio requires its own professional skills.
A good presenter must understand their audience, structure a program, handle live interviews, communicate clearly, manage timing, and maintain the identity of the station.
For Dj Dan Starboy, the microphone should be a place where talent and preparation matter.
It is also a debate that adds an interesting dimension to his own journey.
Rather than leaving technology to social media influencers, Dj Dan Starboy has increasingly embraced technology himself.
The difference is that he wants to combine digital reach with the broadcasting values he learned in radio studios.
His ambition reflects a broader question facing the industry.
Can radio preserve the qualities that made it powerful while adapting to audiences who increasingly discover entertainment online?
Magic 1Xtra is his attempt to explore that question through a product.
In Conversation: The Dream, the Setbacks and the ComebackThe following questions and responses have been organized and edited from DJ Dan Starboy's account of his career and business journey. They are presented in interview style rather than as a verbatim recording of a live interview.
Q: When you look back at the beginning of Magic 1Xtra, what inspired the idea?
DJ Dan Starboy: It started while I was working at Uganda Broadcasting Corporation on Magic 100 FM. We had Coast2Coast every Friday from 9 PM to 1 AM, and we were connecting with reggae and dancehall music from Jamaica. I wanted people outside the normal FM coverage to enjoy that experience too. There wasn't the kind of streaming platform I wanted for the station. So in 2020, I started Magic1Xtra.com with that idea in mind.
Q: Did you imagine it would become the super app you're building today?
DJ Dan Starboy: No. The original idea was about reggae, dancehall, and radio streaming. As time went on, I began to see how television, music, movies, and other forms of entertainment could come together. The idea became bigger as I learned more about technology.
Q: What was one of the hardest parts of trying to turn it into a working application?
DJ Dan Starboy: At first, I didn't have enough money to build the application the way I wanted. I worked with different developers, but we couldn't achieve the experience I had in mind. I also faced problems with Google Play publishing accounts because they weren't under my own control. Those setbacks affected the project badly.
Q: Why didn't you simply abandon the application?
DJ Dan Starboy: The problem that inspired me was still there. I had started Magic 1Xtra for a reason, and I still believed in the idea. Even when I took breaks from development, I continued researching and learning. Eventually, I began learning how to build websites and understand the systems behind them.
Q: What did losing so many hosting customers teach you?
DJ Dan Starboy: I had managed to get close to 200 clients while operating as a reseller, but the server kept going on and off. Clients needed their services to work, and the interruptions cost me their trust. It was a painful lesson about reliability and the importance of having dependable infrastructure.
Q: How does HostHerb fit into the Magic 1Xtra dream?
DJ Dan Starboy: HostHerb has become very important because these digital services need hosting and technical infrastructure. We have Magic1Xtra.com, RadioXtrimFM.com, HighGradeSounds.com, and our radio and TV operations. We cannot build them properly without dependable systems behind them.
Q: What changed in June 2026?
DJ Dan Starboy: I decided to start building the application again from zero. This time, I had spent years learning much more about websites, hosting, and development. I wanted to build something that could grow into the platform I had always imagined instead of continuing to struggle with the older versions.
Q: What do you want people to understand about Magic 1Xtra?
DJ Dan Starboy: The idea started with reggae and dancehall, but it has grown beyond that. The goal is to bring entertainment services together while creating opportunities for artists, DJs, broadcasters, and other creators. It isn't only about streaming music anymore.
Six Years Later, the Dream Is Still Alive
There is a particular kind of frustration that comes with building a business for years and repeatedly finding yourself back at the beginning.
DJ Dan Starboy knows that experience.
He has watched application development attempts fall short. He has dealt with the uncertainty of publishing platforms. He has watched hosting customers leave because of unreliable infrastructure. He has questioned whether his company's name was part of the problem and spent long periods trying to understand what needed to change.
Yet the projects remain connected by one consistent idea.
He wants to build platforms that give people greater access to music, entertainment, and digital services.
The journey from High Grade Sounds to Magic 100 FM, from Coast2Coast to Magic1Xtra.com, and from failed hosting arrangements to HostHerb demonstrates how one entertainment idea gradually expanded into several businesses.
Whether Magic 1Xtra ultimately achieves its biggest ambitions will depend on much more than determination.
It will require reliable technology, compelling content, sustainable operations, the trust of users, and consistent improvements to the platform.
But what makes the story interesting is not a claim that the work is finished.
It is that Dj Dan Starboy has kept returning to the same dream with new lessons.
In 2020, he wanted the world to be able to hear a reggae and dancehall radio show.
In 2026, he is working toward an entertainment platform that brings radio, television, movies, music, and creators together.
The difference between those two visions represents six years of setbacks, adaptation, and technical learning.
For Dj Dan Starboy, the future of entertainment may increasingly belong to people who can combine creativity, broadcasting knowledge, and technology.
And after everything he has experienced, his own journey has become a test of that belief.
From High Grade Sounds to the streets. From the streets to the airwaves. From the airwaves to digital streaming. And now, from streaming into homes and smartphones.
Magic 1Xtra may have started with a four-hour Friday-night radio show.
But its founder is determined that the story should not end when the show goes off air.
The music is still playing. The technology is still evolving. And for DJ Dan Starboy, the dream is far from over.
