Outspoken social and political commentator Frank M. Gashumba has formally petitioned the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) of the Uganda Police Force, asking for investigations into Pastor Robert Kayanja over alleged threats of violence against him and his family.

In a lengthy letter addressed to CID Director AIGP Major Tom Magambo, Gashumba explained that his troubles with Kayanja stemmed from a radio programme in which he was hosted to discuss religious figures he considers false prophets who allegedly exploit poor and unsuspecting members of the public.

Gashumba clarified that he did not mention Kayanja by name during the discussion, insisting that his comments were general and based on biblical teachings about false prophets.

In October, I was hosted to a radio programme on false prophets who exploit the poor and the unsuspecting public.

I did not mention ‘Pastor’ Robert Kayanja. I did not single out any pastor. I preached generally from the words of Jesus about wolves in sheep’s clothing, as stated in Matthew 7:15. The following day, ‘Pastor’ Robert Kayanja waged a personal war against me.

He further accused the pastor of publicly cursing and threatening his life and that of his family, saying the alleged remarks had raised serious security concerns that he could not afford to ignore.

Gashumba added that although he had several things he could say about Kayanja, he was particularly concerned that the pastor’s alleged public threats could potentially translate into actions carried out behind the scenes.

The outspoken commentator consequently confirmed that he had formally lodged a complaint with the police, urging the CID to take the alleged threats seriously and commence investigations.

He maintained that threats should not be dismissed simply because they are presented in the form of religious statements or prayers.

I hope police will accord this complaint the attention and seriousness it demands. A threat is a threat, whether it is dressed as a prayer.”l
