Former comedian-turned-pastor Sammy Okanya of Da Mighty Family is currently behind bars over failure to pay back the money he borrowed.

Sammy was reportedly arrested on Sunday and has been detained at Katwe Police Station to date. According to reports, the pastor is behind bars over claims that he borrowed $10,000 from a Sudanese resident but unfortunately failed to pay back the loan.

He claimed that he obtained that money for missionary work, which included spreading the gospel, organising crusades in different areas in and outside the country.

He also claimed that he used part of that money to go outside Uganda for research purposes to help him fellowship with his congregation.

Sama Senyonga, the representative from Sammy’s Ministry in Kayunga, spoke to journalists and confirmed that Sammy was arrested at the studio where he had gone to record a song in Kasubi.

‘He sent us to call upon all the promoters who had ever held his shows before he became a pastor and all his friends to help him pay this debt. He is in a very bad situation in prison,” he said.
