Ugandan artist Ang3lina, real name Angela Nabuufu, has called on artists and producers to explore new sounds if Ugandan music is to perform better on the global stage.

Ang3lina, who has been on a music break for over 4 years, returned last week with a brand new song dubbed Sippin’.

Since its release, the song has been applauded by music enthusiasts and media personalities who highlight the unique touch and sound not heard in many locally produced songs.

In an interview with NTV The Beat, when responding to the question about why there are few songs on the Apple Music Top 50 African songs playlist, Ang3lina noted that few Ugandans are creating music for the international market.

She noted that apart from Joshua Baraka, the sound for most artists and producers hasn’t changed, and it is such a big problem.

As an industry, from producers to the artists, we have still failed to branch out in terms of our sound. I took a big break from music, almost four years, and now, coming back, I feel like the beats are still the same. They still sound the same.

We lack the willingness to just explore different sounds so that we can eventually hit the international market as well. Most of the music that is created in Uganda is just for Uganda. It’s not for the world. I think that’s our biggest problem.

Musician Ang3lina says Ugandan musicians and producers need to experiment with different genres and sounds if they want to reach a global audience. She argues that the industry is still making music largely for Ugandans rather than the world. #NTVTheBeat pic.twitter.com/FxUIVDv1WC
